Part II, Day 1 – The Journey Begins

Greetings Cyberworld!

In the interest of having slightly more space for luggage and also having more time for fun, we decided not to write about our 2016 adventure in real-time. I hope you will forgive us.

Day 1 (Wednesday) was supposed to begin with me retrieving Black Sheep from the local airport at 10:30, followed by a drive down to Alabama. Unfortunately, due to some nasty weather in Chicago, we got started 2½ hours late. It gave me some time to run a few extra errands in the morning, so I guess it wasn’t all bad. Fortunately, Black Sheep is a wonderful co-pilot who read me trivia questions nearly the whole way down. I learned that a horse cannot breathe through its mouth, an otter’s den is called a “holt,” and that one’s fingernails grow four times as fast as one’s toenails. Now you know too. Of course, our late start meant we arrived at our campground after dark, but it turns out that we can indeed set up a tent in 10 minutes using only a couple of flashlights. We brushed our teeth and went straight to bed.
